Reflectors & collapsible reflectors for photography

With reflectors and collapsible reflectors you focus the enormous flash power of Rollei’s HS Freeze 4 and HS Freeze 6 studio flash units accurately on the desired subject. But due to the manufacturer-independent Bowens connection you can also combine our light shapers with already existing equipment. Depending on the type of reflector, the extensive incidental flash is directed onto the subject by the reflective surface or interior in order to brighten excessively dark areas and to design creative illumination. Both in the photo studio and on an outdoor shoot. Contrary to the soft and very flattering light of a softbox, the very compact measurements, the highly reflective, silver interior coating, and the specially angled shape of the 55-mm aluminium reflector, for instance, provide for a comparatively hard light and clearly outlined shadows. Diffusors and collapsible reflectors are still used then in product and portrait photography whenever a part of the face or a certain area of the product, which is to be captured, does not receive enough light. So reflectors like the aluminium reflector scatter soft, diffuse, extensive illumination with a central focus and thus produce a guidable light cone with a hard edge, which is intensified towards the centre. Meanwhile, the light-absorbing matte black lacquer finish on the exterior prevents unwanted reflections. However, flexibly applicable collapsible reflectors like our 5-in-1 92 x 122-cm Collapsible Reflector combine several functions at the same time. The four different surfaces and the diffusor included ensure that.

Functions of collapsible reflectors:

  • Collapsible reflectors with a white surface brighten a subject holistically.
  • Collapsible reflectors with a black surface darken a subject in order to create a darker shadow on one side
  • However, the silver top side of a collapsible reflector provides for cold light and intensifies hard shadows and thus contrasts. They are used mainly from a greater distance from the subject, in order to throw light into deep shadows, e.g. under trees.
  • The collapsible reflectors with a golden top are used mainly in beauty photography because they produce warm light and emphasise skin tones. Here, be sure not to use the reflector on one side but only for even illumination. In addition backgrounds should not be too far back, since they could look bluish.
  • The diffusor contained scatters the light and softens transitions to shade. For this it is held between the sun and the subject. The impression of a bright yet cloudy sky is created in order to let the light appear softer. It is used particularly frequently in direct sunlight

Flashing effectively against the sun with photo reflectors

The high mobility and the low weight of the battery-operated Rollei HS Freeze flash units are particularly suitable for isolated outdoor locations. Quite often in the process you have to  flash head-on against the sun and the extremely sturdy Rollei photo reflectors then provide for the precise orientation of the fill-in light. Also in the photo studio it is not always easy to attain exactly the lighting, which is needed for the current subject setting. You can find the integrated Bowens connection of the plug-on aluminum reflector on very many professional flash devices and lamps all over the world. Collapsible reflectors are also practical to handle and using them is effortless. In no time at all, the collapsible reflectors can be opened and can be folded up just as quickly. In the future with our reflectors it will be easy for you to adapt the light situation in the studio to the particular subject and also to affect it with our studio flash units and flash devices.

Fasten red, green, blue, yellow or white foils on the reflector with one swift movement

Besides the 55-degree reflector made from high-quality aluminium, Rollei also offers a very versatile reflector with five high-quality magnetic colour foils, which are included directly in the scope of delivery. With these sturdy attachments in red, green, blue, yellow and matte white (frosted glass look) you produce exciting lighting backgrounds, provide the main subject with a mystical lighting mood or produce an additional head light from a rearward perspective.

Tips for photography with collapsible reflectors

  • With collapsible reflectors you can avoid shadows under the eyes and nose in portrait photography with sunlight from above in an outdoor setting.
  • In the photo studio you can flash on the model from the right and the left by means of a camera-independent flash and position the reflector on the other side in order to illuminate both sides well.
  • Be careful when you are using a reflector to brighten up the image from below because that soon creates an unnatural effect.  Although you brighten from below in order to avoid hard shadows. However the reflected light should not be more intense than the light from above. The brightness is adjusted by the distance between the reflector and the subject (the closer the brighter).
  • Reflected light in the eyes enhances the attractiveness of the model and the allure of the eyes.  For this, guide the light (irrespective of the direction) onto the face of the model and then photograph past the side of the collapsible reflector in order to produce light in both eyes.
  • Black collapsible reflectors are ideally suitable for darkening in low key photography, where the existing light is only supposed to fall on one side of the subject. Unwanted reflections on the other side are prevented by the casting back of the light by the black surface.
  • Hard direct light is softened and the brightness in the subject setting is reduced by means of a diffusor. Also, it makes particular sense in direct, intense sunlight. In this way, hard shadows in the face can be prevented despite the midday sun.
