Like many filters for DSLR and Mirrorless systems, the Rollei UV filter is also screwed onto the camera lens.
While not always clearly visible to the human eye, Ultra-Violet light entering the camera can have a detrimental effect on your photographs – leaving a slightly blue colour tone in the image. Popular in analogue photography, many lenses are now manufactured with a UV coating, but an additional UV filter can still have two positive effects on your ability to capture the perfect image:
- The addition of an external UV filter ensures the full spectrum of UV light is cut from entering the camera – whether the camera of lens itself has protection or not. As a safe-guard, this ensures consistent results across your full range of kit.
- Virtually free of colour cast, with no visible loss in usable light transmission, this is a simple addition to your lens that provides protection against accidental damage and scratching to the front glass element. Should you drop, hit or scratch the end of your lens, it’s not the thousands of pounds in replacement that you’d need to consider – simply replace the filter on the end.
You can buy high-quality, coated UV filters from Rollei starting from €34.99 for small lens diameters. Round filters are available for all the popular lens sizes between 49mm and 82mm. The glass on our filters is optically engineers to deliver perfect results every time, so you can leave them permanently on the lens.
Rollei Premium and Extremium UV filters are manufactured from high-quality, durable Gorilla® glass and are also laminated and coated to be colour neutral in every shot. Our unique Luminance Coating adds additional protection from oil, water and mud. Our high quality optically engineered glass also prevents distortions and reflections no matter where you’re shooting.
The filter glass of the Extremium series is held inside in a titanium ring, which is extremely dimensionally stable and temperature-resistant. Regardless of where your outdoors photography takes you, across extremes of hot and cold environments, you can rely on your Mirrorless or DSLR lens being fully against salt, sand, snow and dirt without having a visible effect on image quality. In addition, the titanium socket means the UV filter will not become lodged in the lens thread due to any temperature changes.
What do you use UV filters for?
Are UV filters necessary? To many photographers, they are an essential tool, and is the first purchase they make following the delivery of a new lens. A UV filter provides excellent extra protection to the front of your camera lens, as well as blocking Ultra-Violet light from entering the camera and having a detrimental effect on your images. Not only do UV filters help to protect against numerous environmental effects and stray light, they can also help against damage to your lens which can be a lot more expensive to replace.
It is much easier and cheaper to replace a scratched filter than a scratched lens. Owing to the special manufacturing processes and the high-quality components of our filters they can also be inserted together with reflection-reducing lenses. Lens flares and other reductions in quality are removed. The Rollei round UV filters provide almost no visible loss in usable light transmission, allowing CPL and ND filters to still be used in conjunction while the UV filter remaining in place
Gorilla glass and the rock solid titanium ring of the Extremium filters
For the most extreme locations and climates, we have designed the Rollei Extremium filters which are made of extremely resistant Gorilla®* glass and a virtually indestructible titanium filter ring. Our unique manufacturing process not only delivers a glass surface which is extremely resistant to scratches and damage from sharp objects, but also ensures there is no risk of the filter becoming stuck due to changes in temperature before, during or after your shoot.
To ensure we deliver the highest levels of performance and consistency in our products, we have developed our own procedures for quality control and quality assurance with very low tolerance values at Rollei. Our strict quality control checks mean that we can be confident you will have the very best tools to capture your best images.
The quality management system developed specially by Rollei outshines the usual approaches of the industry and provides for a unique level of quality and means every product is extensively field tested before being made available for sale. As a result your filter will be of a superior standard that can cope with whatever challenge you put your camera through.
“Engineered and quality controlled in Germany” – our process starts before manufacturing and follows the build of each and every product right up until delivery. After development, the first production samples are approved exclusively by the our Rollei filter experts in Germany. The corresponding agreed upon criteria cannot be amended, reduced or retroactively loosened during the following production steps.
Before delivery to Rollei the individual production lots were then subjected to stringent quality inspections according to the AQL (accepted quality limit) principle. This procedure discards the entire manufacturing batch if the quality tolerances of the previously precisely defined sampling quantity do not meet expectations. In the process, the quality of the unchecked products can no longer overturn this decision.
After delivery of the products to Rollei the AQL examination is conducted once more. As a result, there are many processes that are completed before your filter arrives to ensure your products are perfect, each and every time you order.
