How they are different from 360-degree panoramic cameras is that traditional 360-degree panoramic cameras merely capture the semi-sphere and produce semi-spherical videos and images, whereas our 360-degree fully spherical cameras simultaneously record all horizontal and vertical perspectives (sphere). In this way they capture every detail with just one push of a button and play back even what is outside of your personal line of sight & beyond your focus (for example behind you).
The twin-lens system of wide-angle lenses loosely covers the entire 360 degrees and thus eliminates the typically limited viewing angle of a single lens. The integrated software then produces the 360-degree effect whereby both individual images are joined together where they overlap and this is called stitching.
The videos can be played back on all popular terminal devices, whereby the interactive 3D experience on the VR glasses is naturally at its most exciting and most realistic level. But 360-degree recordings are enjoying increasing popularity online and on mobile terminal devices as well as the viewing direction can also be changed by clicking on the mouse and/or swiping and swiveling. The Rollei 360-degree camera can easily be connected to a Smartphone or a tablet by means of integrated Wi-Fi.
Via Wi-Fiand by means of an app for remote control via Smartphones and tablets, they can be controlled, adjusted and triggered by Android or by an iPhone. The suitable Rollei App for Android 4.2+ and iOS 7.0+ is available with immediate effect.
How does the 360-degree camera function?
The 360-degree camera is distinctive in that it shoots photos und videos all around in all directions– vertically and horizontally. For the most part they have two camera sensors for that and two lenses, which each face in the opposite direction. The viewing angle of each of our super wide-angle lenses is so large (210 degrees), that the edges of the recorded shots overlap. With one press of the release both sides take a photo or a video and the software joins both together where they overlap (stitching). The unbeatable USP of these shots in comparison to those of normal digital cameras: As a viewer you can move freely in the video thanks to the interactive spherical panorama.
In general there are several ways & methods for 360-degree recordings:
- Mosaic – several cameras switched as an integrated system (often with so-called rigs). The software then creates an omni-directional overall image.
- Fish-eye lens – using this method a semi-spherical panorama is produced by means of a fish-eye lens and the curvature. Two 180-degree fish-eye lenses thus produce a complete sphere when they are combined (2 x 180 degrees = 360 degrees)
- Mirroring (catadioptic systems) – here the cameras rotate quickly around their own axis (Google street view cameras). Less interesting for the consumer sector. Are often used by robots as it’s possible to take measurements
- Twin lens system – is similar to the fish-eye lens, except for the fact that two super wide-angle lenses are being worked with here as is the case with out 360-degree camera

Questions and answers about 360-degree cameras
What are the advantages and the areas of application of a fully spherical camera?
Interactive full HD spherical panoramas facilitate substantially greater creative leeway for amateur photographers & filmmakers, thus shots of holiday experiences for instance but also for businesses like hotels, which could make a completely new tour of their own facility possible. The all-round view conveys a very real feeling just wth the VR glasses and you freely decide what you would like to look at or not. Ultimately everyone has his own view and his own preferences that are particularly important to him. In order to have anybody participate or to impress him with a slope, a bike tour or a holiday trip, he must be able to experience it in his own way and to discover the details that really interest him as well and not those that we deemed to be important for ourselves. 360-degree spherical panoramas are impressive because of their multifacetedness. Noone gets the feeling that a certain perspective is being forced on him. Instead, the viewer himself discovers the things that are important to him and that arouse a longing in him.
Conversely, classic frontal shots, where the photographer’s perspective decides, which details and subjects others will get to see, fail in many areas and just miss their target online. An interactive spherical paroramic shot conveys the impression that you don’t have anything to hide, that you are transparent and that you would like to provide the best possible service to the viewer whereas classic glossy photos of side-boards or notorious beach views could even come across as dishonest. You never force your own perspective on anyone but enable viewers to find an optimal perspective of their own.
In the private domain, full HD shots of a 360-degree camera enable you above all to relive your personal highlights in an unprecedented way. Within a few seconds you are in the midst of your unforgettable experiences again and can even experience them anew time and again and explore the scenery. In addition, you can select various representational options – Tiny Planet mode, Fish-eye mode, Plane mode or VR mode. Further private and professional areas of application:
- Real estate

Is it also worth purchasing for amateur videographers?
Some time ago, the answer to this question would still have been “No”. However, due to rapid development and the increase in VR glasses, now it is definitely “Yes!”. We all know that when the angle is never wide enough and the perspective is never perfect, Something is always missing from your holiday photo or the video of the concert or of your most recent party. Often, then, we get lost in explanations, which never come close to what we have experienced anyhow. Or somebody runs through the picture. The camera is incorrectly set and records out nostrils. With 360-degree cameras you can pass along all of your memories as you experienced them and at the same time allow your viewers to make the choice of experiencing what you have in their own way – and to move freely through the memory. Purchasing one in conjunction with VR glasses or a suitable Smartphone mounting plate is also worthwhile in the private domain.
Are VR glasses absolutely necessary?
No, however, you can only fully enjoy interactive 360-degree videos & pictures with VR glasses. VR glasses + 360-degree recordings form a so-called „closed system“ which tricks our senses and our brain so that filmed experiences of that kind seem real and perhaps even cause us to sweat on the sofa or to go weak at the knees. For example, when you watch the 360-degree video of a car race, you get the feeling from the VR glasses that you are driving yourself. Your brain and your body are no longer able to distinguish between what’s real and what’s virtual. The same also applies to beautiful moments that we all like to retain. From now on we can live them over and over. In reality as never before.
But of course, the recordings can be played back by means of other terminal devices and there, as well, they have many advantages that are obvious including the free choice of wherever you’d like to see them.
The advantages of VR glasses:
- They are deceptively realistic, as the system is self-contained,
- are relatively affordable to purchase
- and turn your mobile phone into VR glasses by means of the VR Smartphone mounting
