UV filters made from Gorilla® glass for cameras & photography
Like many filters for DSLR and Mirrorless systems, the Rollei UV filter is also screwed onto the camera lens.
While not always clearly visible to the human eye, Ultra-Violet light entering the camera can have a detrimental effect on your photographs – leaving a slightly blue colour tone in the image. Popular in analogue photography, many lenses are now manufactured with a UV coating, but an additional UV filter can still have two positive effects on your ability to capture the perfect image:
- The addition of an external UV filter ensures the full spectrum of UV light is cut from entering the camera – whether the camera of lens itself has protection or not. As a safe-guard, this ensures consistent results across your full range of kit.
- Virtually free of colour cast, with no visible loss in usable light transmission, this is a simple addition to your lens that provides protection against accidental damage and scratching to the front glass element. Should you drop, hit or scratch the end of your lens, it’s not the thousands of pounds in replacement that you’d need to consider – simply replace the filter on the end.
You can buy high-quality, coated UV filters from Rollei starting from €34.99 for small lens diameters. Round filters are available for all the popular lens sizes between 49mm and 82mm. The glass on our filters is optically engineers to deliver perfect results every time, so you can leave them permanently on the lens.
Rollei Premium and Extremium UV filters are manufactured from high-quality, absolutely durable Gorilla® glass and were additionally laminated and coated. The so-called Luminance Coating puts yet another coating on, from which oil, water and mud simply drips off. The high-quality coating of the glass further guarantees that despite filters, colour neutrality continues to be protected while distortions and reflections are reliably prevented.
The filter glass of the Extremium series is retained in a titanium ring, which is extremely dimensionally stable and temperature-resistant - even on photo adventures in the desert, on the sea or on the ice (e.g. in the Arctic). Thus your DSLM or DSLR lens is protected all around in a high-quality manner against salt, sand, snow and dirt without having a visible effect on image quality. It doesn’t matter, where you are taking photographs. In addition, the UV filter will not become lodged in the lens thread owing to the titanium socket.
For what do you use UV filters for modern camera lenses?
UV filters, yes or no? Clearly yes. Because, despite the integrated UV filter in the form of a protective UV layer on the sensor and the good coating of the expensive DSLR lenses, today's system cameras like their expensive front lenses are nevertheless delivered without protection against numerous environmental effects. Therefore, it’s always worthwhile to screw a UV filter onto the camera lens for additional protection instead of having to have it repaired later for a lot of money.
In fact, the present main task of a high-quality UV filter is definitely the protection of expensive front lenses against mechanical damage. Particularly against scratches and stubborn dirt. Because it is much easier and cheaper to replace a scratched filter than a scratched lens. Owing to the special manufacturing processes and the high-quality components of our filters they can also be inserted together with reflection-reducing lenses. Lens flares and other reductions in quality are absent. The Rollei round UV filters impair and darken the incident light only minimally and can remain on the lens but not in combination with CPL filters or ND filters.
Gorilla glass and the indestructible titanium ring of the Extremium filters
Rollei Extremium filters are made of extremely resistant Gorilla®* glass and an almost indestructible titanium filter ring. An extensive bath in a special hot alkaline liquid ensures that there is an effective exchange of ions on the molecular level in Gorilla®* glass and greatly increased surface tension, which defies sharp-edged and pointed objects and prevents further splintering of material even in the event of deeper scratches. And even if this barrier falls due to undue force, the UV filter can simply be unscrewed and the front element and your lens remain intact.
Quality control of the UV filters continues to be considered by Rollei
So that we can also always keep the characteristics of our Extremium filters, which we guarantee, we have developed our own procedures for quality control and quality assurance with very low tolerance values at Rollei. These may appear too hard to some people but this is the only way that we can guarantee that you will really capture subjects that you want to record. And how you envisage doing so.
The quality management system developed specially by Rollei outshines the usual approaches of the industry and provides for a unique level of quality. You have the certainty of possessing a truly superior product that survives even the worst treatment and challenging photography projects unscathed.
The final quality evaluation procedure was then dubbed "engineered and quality controlled in Germany” and consequently, already starts before manufacturing. After development, the first production samples are approved exclusively by the responsible Rollei filter experts. The corresponding agreed upon criteria cannot be amended, reduced or retroactively loosened during the following production steps.
Before delivery to Rollei the individual production lots were then subjected to stringent quality inspections according to the AQL (accepted quality limit) principle. The procedure that is known in the German language as the “acceptable quality limitation level” [Annehmbare Qualitätsgrenzlage] discards the entire manufacturing batch if the quality tolerances of the previously precisely defined sampling quantity do not meet expectations. In the process, the quality of the unchecked products can no longer overturn this decision.
After delivery of the products to Rollei the AQL examination is conducted again. In this way naturally there are considerably higher investments before a Rollei polarisation l filter may finally find its way to you. However, you can then be sure that you are really receiving only the very best quality that satisfies your highest requirements.
